Vaitheeswaran Temple

The Nadi texts that were written in the old Tamil script, also known as Vatteluttu, stand as an evidence of their spiritual wisdom as well as insight of the seers of the past. There are many opinions on the authorship of these extraordinary leaflets, the authors are primarily believed to be the work of the revered Tamil sage known as Agathiyar. Legend says that Agathiyar received revelations from God and was granted the unique ability to look into the web of human fates.

These precious Palm leaves, the source of many life stories are originally kept in the sanctuaries in the Tanjore Saraswati Mahal Library in Tamil Nadu. In the time during British colonial rule, British rulers showed interest in particular Nadi leaves, especially ones that dealt with herbs as well as medicine and predictions. However, the majority of these eminent texts were protected within the library’s sanctum and only accessible to a small few.

Tragically, a portion of these old leaves succumbed to the effects of time and vanished forever, while others made they were in possessions of private collectors in auctions held throughout the British colonial era. But, many of these valuable Nadi leaves ended up into the homes of dedicated Astrologers and families living near the Vaitheeswaran Temple. Over time, this priceless tradition of divination and knowledge is carefully preserved and passed on from one custodian next, making sure that the long-standing tradition of Nadi Astrology continues to flourish in its home and the holy Vaitheeswaran Temple.
